The Bride: Sustainable Fashion for the Conscious Bride

Transforming Bridal Ensembles into Chic Sustainable Fashion

Seeing the impoverished folks who make a living collecting dumped plastic bags and using them to cover their mud houses and construct clothing, designer Tanya Bansal was inspired to create sustainable fashion merged with traditional craft. The result is "The Bride," a bold bridal ensemble that reflects the bride's style and sentiments about sustainability.

The Bride is a unique design that stands out in the world of bridal fashion. Made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, this sustainable ensemble can be transformed into five separate pieces of clothing. The colorful hand-woven collar, made from waste cotton threads, adds a touch of traditional craft to the design.

What sets The Bride apart is not just its use of recycled materials, but also its environmental impact. This recycled clothing utilizes thirty percent less energy than polyester and cuts down on toxin levels, as it does not require washing. Instead, it can simply be cleaned with a wet cloth, making it both convenient and eco-friendly.

The realization of The Bride involved meticulous craftsmanship. The recycled plastic was hand-cut to create unique textures, and the garment was cut and sewn with high standard finishing. The hand-woven collar adds an extra layer of artistry to the design. The ensemble features a sixteen-paneled skirt, a bustier, and a cropped jacket, creating a modern and chic bridal look.

Designed to fit a UK size 8 (Italy 40), The Bride is not only sustainable but also durable. Its use of recycled plastic ensures that it will sustain for a long time, making it a lasting and meaningful choice for the conscious bride.

The Bride was created in India, with the project starting on February 20th, 2015, and finishing on March 1st, 2015. Throughout the design process, the team faced challenges in using recycled plastic in a wearable and aesthetically pleasing way. Precision in cutting and pasting was crucial to achieve the desired outcome.

Sustainability is at the core of The Bride's design. It represents a shift in the perception of sustainability, showing that it is not limited to natural fibers but also extends to recycling materials that would otherwise occupy landfill space. The Bride offers a fresh and innovative outlook on sustainability, proving that sustainable fashion can be both chic and conscious.

The Bride was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2015 in the Fashion, Apparel, and Garment Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Bride's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
